Welcome to the Flora and Fauna website.
Salmon Creek is home to a surprisingly high number and diversity of plants and animals.. Over 400 species of birds have been documented in Humboldt county, with many of the species being tallied in and around Humboldt Bay. Salmon Creek alone has over 1/3 of those species present throughout much of the year. Due to both our proximity to the coast and the south fork of the Eel River and because of an amazing diversity of habitats from open meadowlands to the lush headwaters of Gilham Butte, we are blessed with a birding opportunity that many people would travel miles for right here in our own back yards! Although many birds are just passing through during migration, we have a host of resident species, some of which are listed as threatened or endangered. Along with species that would typically be found in the habitats of our pristine watershed, the abundance of man-made ponds has substantially increased the opprtunities to observe species of migratory waterfowl and other shorebirds that would otherwise not be present. Here is a list of birds that have been observed in Salmon Creek. Those with a star (*) next to the name may be present at times but haven't been positively identified. The list will be updated as species accounts are verified. The list can be used in conjunction with the links provided to help you identify birds by photos and descriptions. Any sightings that you have noted can be added in time. Enjoy. Kyle andTom |
