Approximately 20,000 species of terrestrial arthropods (bugs) can be found in Northern California. The estimated number of species that may be present in Salmon Creek is obviously unknown but their presence can be observed in many forms and in several different habitats. Most species of insects may go unnoticed except for the ones that bite, sting, are detrimental in one way or another, or are beautiful. Butterflies are perhaps the most noticed insect for their beauty and we have several species present in our watershed. Due to the enormous diversity of insect species found here we have selected only
some of the most bizarre, beautiful, or dangerous of species. Some species have been chosen based on the ability to be able to photograph them. The list will grow in time as we take on this absolutely ridiculous task of identifying the largest group of living creatures on the planet.......bugs.
* Photos of unidentified species if insects may be displayed until positively identified just for the heck of it.
